What Happens at the Notarization ?

The notarization process usually takes a few minutes depending on witnesses and how many documents need notarization. The notarization process is simple.

Identification and Verification:

The notary will ask you to provide a valid and government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license, passport, or state ID, to confirm your identity.

The notary will check the ID to ensure it is current and that the photo and personal details match those of the person signing the document. Sometimes photos are taken on the phone.

Document Review and Explanation:

The notary will review the document(s) you need to have notarized to ensure they are complete and have spaces for signatures.

******If you have any questions about the document’s content, the notary can provide a general explanation, but they cannot provide legal advice or interpret the document’s meaning.

Signing in the Notary’s Presence:

You will be asked to sign the document(s) in the presence of the notary.

An attorney may guide you on how to fill out document per your wishes but do not pre-sign your signatures until your notary does the notarization. The notary watches you sign as part of their legal duty.

The notary will confirm that you are signing the document willingly and that you understand its contents.

Notary’s Seal and Certificate:

After you have signed the document(s), the notary will affix their official seal or stamp on the document.

They will also complete a notarial certificate, which includes essential details such as the date, location, and a description of the document being notarized.

Many notaries maintain a journal in which they record details of the notarization, including the type of document, the names of the parties involved, and the notarial act performed.

Notary Journal Entry:

This journal entry provides a record of the notarization, which may be required by law or for legal protection.
